Mission & Vision: Advancing higher education and fostering inclusive philanthropy practices.
History of the Conference:
The Professionals in Women's Philanthropy (PWP) Conference is now in its 5th year, having grown steadily since its inception. Each year, the conference has welcomed an increasing number of professionals dedicated to advancing higher education through inclusive philanthropy. The event has become a cornerstone for networking, learning, and building a lasting community of philanthropic leaders. Participants collaborate on best practices, explore emerging fundraising trends, and develop innovative solutions to challenges facing higher education institutions worldwide.
With a new name and brand in 2025, the Association for the Advancement of Women’s Philanthropy (AAWP) welcomes you into our collective! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Cannie Graham
Cannie Campbell, MPH, MA/EdS is the Associate Vice President of Constituent Engagement & Executive Director of Women for Madison at James Madison University. With 25 years of diverse experience in higher education, leadership, and volunteerism, as well as her expertise in women’s philanthropy, Cannie is an accomplished higher education administrator, consultant, speaker, scholar, writer, and strategic thought partner. A leader in her field, she is relational, intuitive, and authentic and brings a spark to her work that is unmatched. Cannie is committed to changing the face of philanthropy and further engaging women and other affinity based groups as empowered, philanthropic change agents.
In addition, Cannie founded and operates her own consulting practice, Spark Women's Philanthropy. She is a proud and passionate founding member of the Women’s Philanthropy Alliance (WPA) and a co-leader of the Professionals in Women's Philanthropy group. -
Val Cushman
Valerie Cushman, Ph.D. in higher education, Executive Director of Alumni Engagement & Inclusion Initiatives at W&M, a proud member of the Women’s Philanthropy Alliance, a co-leader of the Professionals in Women's Philanthropy group and has proven success growing women’s philanthropy.
With over 30 years of experience in public and private institutions, having served on the cabinet of two universities, she brings a depth of knowledge and experience in fundraising practices that convert high-capacity women into impactful donors. At W&M, she founded the creation and leads the sustained efforts of the Society of 1918, a collective of women philanthropists who contributed 55% of the donated funds to the $1 billion For the Bold campaign and raised a $5.4 million endowment that will forever support the growth of women’s engagement, leadership and philanthropy at W&M. As a consultant, using proven principles and practices she facilitates university advancement teams, inclusive of leadership, development officers and alumnae, as they together discover and engage in practices that grow women’s volunteer engagement and leadership that quickly drive growth in philanthropy.

Sallie-Grace Tate
Sallie-Grace Tate has over 25 years of experience as a trusted relationship-builder, major gift fundraiser, and program creator. Working for public and private universities and in secondary education, she has extensive knowledge of women as leaders, philanthropists, and volunteers, and is committed to growing women’s philanthropy. Recognizing that women are leading a new era in philanthropy, Sallie-Grace works with organization leaders and volunteers to build initiatives and programs that engage women to use their economic power and position for the greater good. As a certified 21/64 Advisor, Sallie-Grace partners with individuals, couples, and families by guiding conversations and utilizing tools helping to clarify their philanthropic goals.
Sallie-Grace is Principal of Tate Coaching and Consulting, a founding member of the Women’s Philanthropy Alliance, and a co-leader of the Professionals in Women's Philanthropy group. She also serves as the founding Executive Director for Women & Philanthropy at the University of California at Davis.

Amanda Lindbom
Associate Director, Alumni Engagement & Inclusion Initiatives
Experienced event planner and project manager with a demonstrated history of working in hospitality and higher education. Skilled in event/conference coordination, registration management, virtual and in-person events, CRMs, teaching and customer service. Strong operations professional with a BA in English from Michigan State, a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) focused in Theatre and a Teaching Certification in Secondary English from Mary Baldwin College.
Dr. Connie LeDoux Book
Dr. Connie LeDoux Book is a passionate advocate for higher education and its power to transform students’ lives. She spent 16 years as an Elon University faculty member and administrative leader, helping to build the university’s reputation for excellence in engaged teaching and learning. In 2015 she accepted a groundbreaking role as the first female provost and chief academic officer at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. Following her impressive accomplishments there, she returned to Elon as president in 2018, bringing a deep appreciation for the university’s unique history and its rapid rise to national prominence.
Under President Book’s leadership, Elon has been annually ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the #1 national university for excellence in undergraduate teaching and the nation’s leader in eight “programs that enhance student experience.”
In 2020, President Book led creation of the 10-year Boldly Elon strategic plan to advance the university’s national leadership in experiential education, mentoring and student success. The university has established innovative new academic programs in engineering, nursing, science and technology, expanded programs to promote health and wellness and invested in new programs to support inclusive excellence, faculty and staff, and alumni engagement. New facilities include the Innovation Quad for engineering and sciences, Schar Center (a 5,000-seat convocation center and sports arena), Sankey Hall, Koenigsberger Learning Center, East Residential Neighborhood, LaRose Student Commons, and The Inn at Elon, an on-campus hotel.
In 2024 Book led the historic establishment of an Elon campus in Charlotte, North Carolina, the state’s largest metropolitan area. The facilities house the new part-time Flex Law program of Elon University School of Law, along with undergraduate programs in sport management and summer study programs that are part of Elon’s Study USA opportunities.
Book spearheaded the successful Elon LEADS comprehensive campaign, raising $260 million for endowed scholarships and engaged learning scholarship funds, eight new facilities, three new professorships, and an endowment for the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education with support of the largest single gift in Elon history.
As an advocate for access to education at all levels, Book is past chair of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and serves as NAICU’s representative on the board of the American Council on Education (ACE). She is a board member for the North Carolina Independent College and Universities (NCICU), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), Project Pericles and many others.
Book has a doctorate from the Grady College of Journalism at the University of Georgia, a master’s degree in education administration and supervision from Northwestern State University (Louisiana) and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Louisiana State University.
Cat Slack
Cat is a nationally recognized fundraising expert, strategist, writer, communications strategist, public speaker, and trainer. Cat has led partnerships with dozens of organizations such as: BostonWomen’s Fund, California State University in Sacramento, Feeding America, International Rescue Mission, RestoreOKC, North Texas Food Bank, Food Bank of Northern Nevada, United Way of Rhode Island, and many more. She advises c-suite leaders through transition and culture-change as they grow and leads acclaimed trainings for fundraisers in myriad missions across the United States. Carme Williams, CFRE
Carme Williams is a seasoned advancement professional with nearly three decades of leadership in corporate and nonprofit sectors. She has held key development roles at Rice University, Houston Community College Foundation, and Prairie View A&M University, where she increased philanthropic revenue by 48%. Now with Washburn & McGoldrick, she advises institutions on fundraising strategy, alumni engagement, and board development. A passionate advocate for women’s philanthropy and inclusive giving, Carme serves on the NC State University Foundation Board and holds leadership roles with AADO, the United Nations Houston Chapter, and the Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce. Alexis Franzese
Department Chair and Associate Professor at Elon University
Dr. Alexis Franzese is the Department Chair and an Associate Professor for the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Elon University. With academic training in the fields of sociology and psychology, her teaching and research interests are at the intersection of these fields and her main area of inquiry is on issues of self, identity, and well-being. She is especially passionate about her study of authenticity – being one’s true self – and is currently conducting research on authenticity and identity within travel and tourism, with Disney as a strategic domain of focus. In addition to publications within edited volumes and other peer-reviewed collections, her research has been published in journals that span the breadth of her scholarly interests and include International Journal of Scholarship on Teaching and Learning, Personality and Individual Differences, Sociology Compass, Aging and Mental Health, and others. She is a graduate of Union College and Duke University, where she completed two separate doctoral degrees in sociology and in clinical psychology. Jen Stone
Associate Vice President, Advancement | Alumni and Parent Giving, Colgate University
Jen Stone has more than two decades of leadership experience in non-profit advancement with experience in annual giving, women’s and parent’s philanthropy, major gifts and alumni engagement. In her most recent role as Associate Vice President for Advancement at Colgate University, she serves as part of the senior leadership team in driving The Campaign for the Third Century, which has a $1 billion goal. Stone currently oversees a data-driven Annual Giving program that has increased unrestricted giving by 30% over the past six years. Stone also manages Colgate’s parent giving and women’s philanthropy efforts, both of which have seen significant growth within the past two years. The Women’s Leadership Council has recently launched a $200 million multi-year initiative under her leadership. Believing in the player-coach leadership model, Stone fosters collaboration across campus, working closely with the President’s Cabinet and board members. Notable achievements include serving as Chief of Staff to the Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement, supporting Colgate’s Bicentennial Reunion, and building a strong alumni relations program. Stone has received several accolades for their leadership, including the John LeFevre ’41 Athletics Leadership Award and the Maroon Citation awarded by the Alumni Council.

Kathleen Maloney Sykes

Kathleen Sykes is a dedicated nonprofit professional with extensive experience in fundraising, organizational strategy, and relationship management. As a Leadership Gifts Officer at Bowdoin College, Kathleen works closely with donors to deepen their connection to the College and advance its mission. She also leads a women’s philanthropic engagement and philanthropy initiative called the Bowdoin Network of Women.
Before joining Bowdoin, Kathleen spent 15 years in nonprofit sector in Boston. She served as Director of Development and Communications at The Food Project, where she successfully led efforts to raise over $3.5 million annually and implemented strategies that doubled grant revenue. Kathleen also held the role of Director of Development at CommonWealth Kitchen, contributing to organizational strategy and securing critical funding growth.
Kathlen began her career as a commercial litigator, managing complex cases and developing the analytical and communication skills that continue to underpin her success in the nonprofit sector. A graduate of Bates College and Suffolk University Law School, she is passionate about advancing mission-driven organizations and fostering lasting connections.

Karla Munden

Siara Abdulla

Siara Abdulla, a native of Augusta, Georgia, serves as Director of Development for Strategic Initiatives at the University of Georgia where she received an AB in Art History in 2004. Siara has spent most of her 18 year development career working in various roles at UGA – from the College of Education to Regional Development. In her current role, she works with University-wide fundraising initiatives such as Georgia Women Give, a new program for women’s philanthropy founded in 2023.
Her vision for this program began to take shape when she was a participant in UGA’s Women’s Staff Leadership Initiative. In her spare time, Siara loves cooking, reading, and spending time with her rescue dog Poppy.

You will receive a full refund, minus a $50 administrative fee.Cancellations made 15–29 days before the conference:
You will receive a 75% refund of the registration fee.Cancellations made less than 15 days before the conference:

If you are unable to attend the conference, you may transfer your registration to another individual at no additional charge. To process a substitution, please notify us in writing at least 7 days before the conference. Be sure to include the following details about the substitute attendee:

In the unlikely event that the conference is canceled by the organizers, all registrants will receive a full refund of their registration fees.
